Group of 4 women, sitting and standing in this posed studio tintype. Individuals are not identified. Matte has a Christmas motif and is tied with a silk rope. Etched, or perhaps written, directly on the image: "Standing Laura Gourley [illeg.] Schurman [illeg.] Annie Bishop [illeg.]" Handwritten in pencil and ink on reverse: "Picture of room-mates 1876" and "Girls of the Old Seminary. The Principal was J.F. Tufts. Lady Principal Miss Marie Woodworth. Girls standing Laura Lounsbury Miss Schurman. Seated Annie Bishop and Unice Eaton". Also handwritten "Miss Schurman was a sister of Jacob Gould Schurman" and "Miss Schurman was a sister of Prof. Schurman" and "Annie Bishop (Mrs. J.L.Read) was a boarder at the Sem in 1874 and 1876."
Graduate list for the Female Department of Horton Academy indicate Minnie Schurman graduated in 1876 and Laura Gourley graduated in 1878.
